Memorial Day services planned in Puna, Hakalau

Interfaith Memorial Day services are planned in Puna and Hakalau to honor those from each community who were killed in military action.

Remember that these men gave their lives for freedom, peace and democracy.

The Puna District service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 25, on the front lawn of Puna Hongwanji Mission in Keaau. The community is invited to honor Puna veterans in the Centennial Memorial Garden fronting the temple.

The Hawaii County Band will perform at 9:45 a.m., and there will be a prelude before the service.

Guest speaker will be Dr. Peter Matsuura.

All families, relatives and friends of the veterans from the Puna District who were killed in action are encouraged to attend.

The public also is invited.

This event is hosted by Puna Hongwanji Mission. Refreshments will be served in the social hall following the service.

Hakalau Jodo Mission, located at 28-2271 Old Mamalahoa Highway, invites people in the Hamakua area to Veterans Ball Park at 10 a.m. Saturday for a service to honor the area’s fallen soldiers.

Guest speaker will be Col. Debra Lewis (ret.), who is an expert coach of Mental Tough Women.

Temple members invite everyone who attends for refreshments after the service in Hakalau Jodo Mission’s dining room.

This event is sponsored by Hakalau Jodo Mission.
